Mazda Miata Wheel Hubs and Wheel Bearings!
Few components have so much to do with the safety and performance of your vehicle as the wheel hub or wheel bearing assembly. Besides the obvious function of attaching the wheels to the car and allowing the wheels to turn smoothly, these parts also play a key role in steering and braking. Depending on the make and model of the car a simple press-in bearing cartridge may be used, a separate bearing and race, or in many cases, a complete wheel hub assembly is required. Wheel hub assemblies often contain the ABS wheel speed sensors that are needed for anti-lock braking systems to function properly. Whether a press-in or wheel hub design is used, the real work gets done by the bearings and circular races they ride in. In the case of simple race and bearing designs, high temperature bearing grease is used, and should be serviced according to manufacturer's recommendations. Sealed systems such as wheel hub assemblies are lubricated at the factory, and are not serviceable.
Like any other mechanical system, bearings are subject to wear and can be damaged by hitting potholes or any other harsh impact. Damaged bearings or hubs often make a grinding sound and can become loose enough to affect handling and braking integrity. In "worse case" scenarios" a wheel could actually come off your car!
Replacing your own hubs or bearings is a task best attempted by a advanced DIY (do-it-yourselfer), or a professional technician.
