Throttle Body Assemblies
A throttle body is the assembly which contains several components that adjust the amount of air (and as a result, fuel) that enter the engine. One piece of the throttle body that is universal is the throttle plate, which is mounted on a rod that allows it to rotate. The plate allows a certain amount of air into the intake manifold depending on how far down the pedal is pressed, from closed to WOT (wide open throttle). In a TBI (Throttle Body Injection) system, the assembly also contains sensors and one or more fuel injectors. The vehicle's computer measures input from these sensors and opens or closes the injector to provide the right air-fuel ratio to give the engine optimum performance.
Throttle bodies can gunk up, or another problem is for corrosion to occur where the coolant feeds through the assembly. Whenever this happens the engine will experience spotty performance, rough idling, and other undesirable conditions.
Replacing a throttle body could turn into a complicated, and even risky task, considering the electronics and pressurized fuel systems present in fuel injected engines. We recommend having a professional service your throttle body unless you are a seasoned mechanic!
