Radiators are used in vehicles to dissipate heat from the engine (and sometimes transmission) into the atmosphere. Coolant flows through a series of tubes inside the radiator, which are connected to very thin fins. The fins increase the surface area of these tubes, thus greatly increasing the amount of heat able to be transferred to the surrounding air.
The tubes inside of a radiator can become clogged with debris if the system is not maintained properly. They are also very easily damaged as the fins are fragile. While a few bent fins is usually not a cause for concern, too many bent fins or a smashed radiator will not properly cool or could even leak.
Replacing a radiator will require draining the cooling system, flushing and could potentially involve removing other components of the vehicle.
