Power Steering Pumps
Power steering pumps provide pressurized hydraulic fluid to the steering gear to assist with steering. They are driven by a belt which is turned by the crankshaft, attached to a pulley.
As with any moving, mechanical component, power steering pumps experience wear over time. Dirty or low fluid, improperly tensioned belts, low quality manufacturing and conaminants in the system will accelarate this wear. When a power steering pump is failing or low on fluid, a very recognizable 'whine' can often be heard from under the hood.
Replacing a power steering pump requires servicing the hydraulic steering system of your vehicle. If you are unsure of what is needed, it is most likely best left to a professional.
