Mufflers work by causing the sound waves generated by an engine to bounce off of the walls inside a chamber, which collide with each other and cancel out much of the noise that ultimately escapes the exhaust system. This process does create backpressure, however, which can rob an engine of performance.
Mufflers can rust or become damaged during the course of normal usage. They may also become clogged from an engine not running properly.
Replacing mufflers may often require welding, althought this is not always the case.
