Lift supports are used to keep hatches, hoods and large glass windows supported when in their open state. They are designed to resist just enough pressure to hold what they are supporting up, but once a person attempts to close they give way.
Over time lift supports will fail and lose the ability to hold their designed weight. When this happens, the support will gradually or suddenly give, allowing the hood, trunk, hatch or glass window to close.
Replacing lift supports is not exceptionally difficult, usually just requiring the removal and reinstallation of a few bolts.
