A CV Shaft (also known as CV Axle, Half Shaft and Drive Shaft) is part of front wheel drive transaxles and rear wheel drive vehicles with independent suspensions. It is a drvie shaft with CV joints at both ends, which allows the transmission to provide constant power to the wheels during the full range of motion allowed by the suspension.
CV Axles have boots around the joints built onto them, and when these boots crack or wear down enough contaminents get into the joint, eventually ruining them. Joints can also wear out over time. A "humming" noise, popping or clicking during acceleration or turning may point to a failing or bad CV joint in your CV axle.
Unless you have experience servicing transmissions and drivetrains, this is a repair best left to a professional!
