Coil springs are designed to cushion a vehicle from the imperfections in the road. Energy from the impacts are distributed throughout the spring, however this alone does not provide a smooth ride. Without a shock absorber to dampen the energy (converting it from kinetic to thermal) the spring would cause the vehcile to bounce around uncontrollably. The spring and shock absorber together is known as a strut assembly, or MacPherson Strut Assembly.
Springs are known to wear down over time, and under some circumstances (either extreme conditions or poor quality) they can also break. Some symptoms of bad coil springs are abnormal tire wear, excess noise, vehicle sway or tilt and excessive bounce.
Replacing coil springs should be left to experienced technicians.
