Clutches and Clutch Plates
Clutches are used to connect the engine to the transmission in vehicles with manual transmissions. They are made of friction material, similar to brake pads, and press up against a flywheel which transmits the rotating motion of engines.
Since clutch plates are made from friction material, they will wear out over time even with gentle use. Some clutch plates can last over 80,000 miles with careful operation, while others could burn out in less than 35,000. It all depends on the quality of clutch plate, the condition of the clutch system and the operator's skill in properly engaging and disengaging the clutch.
Replacing a clutch will be a repair best left to experienced automotive technicians.
